Saving Money for Lifestyle Shopping

These are hard economic times for people around the world ever since the recession hit America and European Union and slowly spread to other countries in the world. Even economies that were performing excellently well and pulling continent on their shoulders like Singapore and China are facing the heat today. In such a scenario when surviving is difficult with current rate of savings, talking about saving money for lifestyle shopping looks and seems absurd.
However, lifestyle shopping seems to be the order of the day, and when you are living in one of the top economies of the world, you cannot afford to make excuses of a sluggish economy to keep postponing buying lifestyle products for long. If you are looking to save money to be able to change your lifestyle, you need a bit of guidance as saving does not come naturally to everyone.
There are some people in Singapore who seem to save enough quickly to effect changes in their lifestyle while others cannot seem to save more than a trickle even with conscious efforts. It does not call for pinching money downgrading your quality of life to be able to save money. In fact, all it takes is a change in the way a person spends money. To earn more to save more is something that everyone knows. What is not known is to be able to save with your current earning capacity.

Fun Places to Visit in Singapore

Universal Studios – This is a theme park that reminds tourists of Walt Disney resort in Florida, USA. However, this is a different type of entertainment as kids see and enjoy time with characters like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, Mickey Mouse, and so on. There are also rides galore and they are free for kids after entrance fee has been paid.
Singapore Night Safari – As the name implies, this is another thrilling place mainly for the kids as they get to see hundreds of animals from different countries roaming in their natural habitat from close quarters sitting in a tram. One can hope to see the one horned rhinoceros, the Himalayan vulture, the anteater, gazelles, and many other species of animals. Most of the animals roaming in this night safari are nocturnal in nature.
Bowling alleys – One sporting activity that is extremely popular in Singapore is bowling. There are around a dozen bowling alleys in the country where kids and adults can enjoy the sport and spend their time with this thrilling activity indoors.
Water sports – Being surrounded by water on all sides, Singapore presents endless opportunities to all lovers of water sports such as scuba diving, snorkeling, water skiing, etc.

The Progress of Singapore Cinema

Another interesting feature was that both studios owned cinema halls across the country and showed their own films in addition to Hollywood films. What was worth praising was that much of the creative cinema was made during this period with collaborative efforts of Malay, Chinese, and Indian talent. Hussein Hanif was an extraordinary talent who worked as a director for Cathay studios while P. Ramlee was a great actor who worked for Shaw studios and even won the best Asian Actor award during Asian Film Festival in 1957.
Malay, Tamil, and Chinese films were made through a collaborative effort. The coming of television to Singapore in 1963, death of Loke Won Tho, the head of Cathay studios, and leaving of P. Ramlee to make films in Malaysia were three events that jolted the film industry in Singapore that could not be revived till 1990’s when government took upon itself to do something for the film industry. Films made in 1990’s achieved commercial success leading to new talent coming into film making and since then, there has been no looking back with dozens of Singaporean films getting released every year in the last decade or so. The grand success for Singapore cinema came in 2008 when My Magic, a Tamil movie made in Singapore competed at the Cannes Film Festival.

How Singapore Uses Traditional Media to Maintain Order

If we try to compare the model of press and electronic media in Singapore with that seen in western countries, we find that that there is too much control and censorship from the government as far as content of programs and published articles in newspapers are concerned. This is ostensibly done to preserve the traditional fabric of the society which the government feels is conservative and not yet ready to absorb the unfettered freedom that has been given to press and media in the west. This policy of censorship, coming from a country that has been ranked as number one globalized country is a bit perplexing.

But if one were to analyze the situation from the perspective of the government of Singapore, it seems that the control and censorship in place is right for the people and the step by step approach is likely to bring more freedom as far as exchange of information is concerned. Radio, TV, and print media continue to operate under government control with all 7 local TV channels and all 14 radio stations being run by government controlled company called Media Corp. Newspapers also remain under the control of the government through Singapore Press Holdings, a government controlled company.
